NPRG036-l01 - Introduction - Data Formats

In this lecture, an introduction to data formats is presented. It includes demonstration of conceptual modeling, conceptual, logical, and physical points of view on data. Moreover, comparison of binary and text-based formats and their basic properties is given, including the openness of formats, machine-readability, character encoding (US-ASCII, UTF-8), and newline representations. The motivation for standardization and overview of basic standardization bodies in the field is given. Finally, the identification of entities using URIs, URNs, URLs, and IRIs is explained, together with an overview of common data types found in common data formats.
