OpenShift Mirror Registry provides a lightweight Quay deployment to host container images locally. The advantage being that it can greatly speed up the deployment and upgrade time for OpenShift and OKD clusters. While also providing a local container registry that you can utilise for other container images as well.
While I wouldn't recommend this for large scale OKD or OpenShift deployments. In such a scenario, I would high recommend using a full deployment of Red Hat Quay. But mirror registry provides a great solution for small deployments and home labs.
