Invariant theory was an important part of nineteenth century algebra which now plays an indispensable part in algebraic geometry. In this video we introduce the topic by looking at the simplest interesting surface singularity, the ordinary double point. In particular, we see how to put geometry on group quotients by looking at the dual picture and connecting the notion to rings of invariants.
