An important aspect of synthetic organic chemistry is characterization of the final product. Disclosure of full characterization of a product allows other scientists to confirm that they have reproduced the original work. Characterization data are included in the experimental section of a publication. This video highlights three types of characterization data - melting point (mp), thin-layer chromatography, (TLC), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Melting ranges of a sample and TLC are particularly good for establishing a compound's purity. NMR is excellent for both characterization and purity.
