Abstract:
Exact diagonalization of Hamilitonian operators for quantum systems is an intractable problem since the dimension of the associated Hilbert space grows exponentially with the degrees of freedom of the system. The Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) is a staple numerical algorithm based on the variational method used to compute the ground state energy of strongly correlated 1D quantum systems. The DMRG effectively truncates the dimension of the associated Hilbert space, retaining only a collection of states that capture the relevant dynamics of the system. In this talk, we will provide a brief introduction to the Matrix Product State formalism of the DMRG in the context of spin chains.
