Watch this Proofpoint how-to video tutorial to understand the email communication process as it travels from sender to recipient. The outbound/inbound email processing system cycle: 1) The email processing cycle begins at a Mail User Agent (MUA). Common MUA’s include Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird. 2) An email is sent via the MUA over an internal Message Transfer Agent (MTA). 3) The internal MTA server transfers the message to a mail server MTA (or email MTA). 4) The mail server MTA transfers the email via the internet to the recipient’s mail server MTA. 5) The receiver’s mail server MTA passes the email through the internal network to the receiver’s internal Mail Delivery Agent (MDA). 6) The receiver’s internal MDA passes the email to the receivers MUA, where it can be read in their email inbox.
