https://www.commtank.com/tank-articles/ust-sump-spill-bucket-testing-requirements-new-hampshire.php In 2015, the EPA released a new set of regulations that require overfill protection devices to be inspected monthly and tested every three years. There are 3 types overfill prevention devices. Ball Float Valve restricts flow of fuel into a storage tank at 90% of capacity. Overfill Prevention Valves shut off fuels flow into the tank at 95%. Tank Alarms provide an audible and visible warning to the delivery person via the automatic tank gauge. A tank alarm inspection requires the ATG probe to be removed from the tank. After it’s removed the technician moves the lower float to simulate a low level alarm. The upper float is moved to trigger a high level alarm. To inspect an overfill prevention valve, the technician removes the drop tube from the tank. He manually operates the float and observes the movement of the flapper valve to ensure that if closes. The length of the drop tube is measured to verify that the valve closes at 95% of the tank capacity. Ball float inspections require that the ball valve is removed from the tank using a special notched tool. The ball float is inspected to verify the float is intact and that it can move in the cage unrestricted. The length of the pipe and the ball float are measured to verify that fuel is restricted at 90% capacity of the tank. Unlike tank sensors, these devices do not have to be placed in water to test them. The reasonable option would be to overfill the tank to test these devices but the manufacturers feel this is unnecessary. Just checking the mechanical action of the ball float and the overfill prevention valve is sufficient for testing.
