As of July 1, 2025, all MARCS radios will require the P25 Radio Authentication (link layer). Link Layer provides a second layer of authentication to avoid duplicate ID’s and added protection from hackers. The P25 radio system initiates the authentication process once the subscriber radio registers with the system. The Link Layer update must be added to existing radios purchased before 2020.
