Today’s video is called Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder Explained. Panic attacks are a common problem faced in both primary care and psychiatric settings. Panic attacks differ from experiencing general anxiety or stress. Panic attacks are discrete episodes of sudden fear or distress accompanied by at least 4 of the 13 common symptoms that will be described in today’s video. Also important to note is that experiencing panic attacks does not automatically equal having panic disorder. Panic attacks themselves can be a symptom or a result of other issues like other medical or psychiatric conditions or the consequences of other substance or medications. Today’s video will also briefly cover the actual diagnostic criteria for Panic Disorder. Panic Disorder affects approximately 2.7% of adults in the U.S. in any given calendar year and is roughly twice as common in women compared to men, which may possibly be attributed to some underreporting of this issue in men. Hopefully this brief overview gives you a basic understanding of what a panic attack is and what the diagnostic criteria for panic disorder is.
