The “safest” motion in part writing for tonal music is the contrary and the oblique motion, because they do not produce what at least musicians in the eighteenth century considered as a terrible mistake. Whenever we talk about voice leading we are talking about two specific things: 1) a vertical progression of individual melodic lines, and 2 the horizontal interaction of these lines with one another In each case, the voices exploit the shortest possible path to the next note. And so… Efficient voice leading is not only a matter of comfort for the performers, but, It also enables listeners to separate vertical harmonies into horizontal musical lines. The goal is to find efficient voice leadings while also satisfying a style-specific context.
