Parashat | Yitro “Jethro”

Thank you for joining us for this week’s Tree of Life Congregation service, a time of learning and reflection. In this week’s darash, Alexandra walks us through Parashat Yitro, introducing us to Yitro, the Midianite priest who, upon hearing what Adonai had done for Israel, blesses God, makes sacrifices, and joins the leaders of Israel in worship. This sets the stage for a profound truth: God desires to meet with His people. Alexandra highlights that the language used in this parsha mirrors ancient marriage ceremonies—“I will be your husband, and you will be my wife”—bringing a sense of identity, protection, and provision. The Israelites were not brought out of Egypt aimlessly; they were called for a purpose: to love Adonai, be known by His name, and share His Word. God sets Israel apart as a nation of priests, distinct from the world, equipped to stand as His representatives, and empowered to enter communion with Him. As the Torah recounts the giving of the Ten Commandments, God allows the Israelites to experience His presence directly—they hear and see His voice. Alexandra emphasizes that the Torah was never meant to be hidden but shared, blessing all nations through Israel. She draws the connection to today: just as the Israelites recognized God’s voice, we too can hear the voice of the Good Shepherd. Through Yeshua, the overflow of God’s love extends to the whole world. The Ruach HaKodesh equips us to walk in Torah, remain in His ways, and carry the priestly calling into our lives. Just as priests were appointed in ancient Israel, after Yeshua we all become priests unto the nations, tasked with embodying and sharing God’s love and blessing in our world. Alexandra’s message reminds us that God’s call is purposeful, personal, and practical—He meets us, equips us, and invites us to stand distinct, empowered, and holy in the ways of His love.
