Patrick Kenny: Stormchaser
Patrick Kenny writes: This piece was originally the finale of a three movement brass quintet I wrote whilst at St Mary’s Music School, with most of the ideas being based around trying to create a good groove! For this final movement I also had some kind of spy chase movie idea in mind, greatly helped by the expertise of Tom David Wilson who was my composition teacher at the time, instilling many inspiring thoughts! At the final climax the imaginary hero defeats his assailant but simultaneously realises his butler has been sleeping with his wife - devastating. The album Stormchaser was recorded in 2015 by Carnyx Brass when all the members were still pupils at St Mary's Music School in Edinburgh - it is now a professional ensemble based in London and Edinburgh, managed by the charitable company Carnyx & Co. These three pieces were composed by an earlier generation of player composers in the group, commissioned and premiered at the Essen Philharmonic Hall in 2008.
