During the War of 1812 when British forces were in sight of taking Washington D.C. Mayor De Witt Clinton of New York put out a call in the local newspapers for all able bodied men to build fortifications for the oncoming British attack. This song celebrates the men of New York from all sorts of backgrounds coming together in patriotic brotherhood to work together for the defense of their country.
