PEAK’s Design Is Brilliant

I see PEAK as a game worth returning to. It’s good at what it sets out to do, which is to be a comfy hang out with friends on discord. It’s very easy to make your own fun in this game, despite how simple it is. I like how you can toss supplies to friends, and put stuff in their backpacks. I like how you can help people up and give them boosts. I like the proximity chat, which encourages staying together. And it can create some eerie moments when you hear someone’s voice echo from the other side of the mountain. Some have accused PEAK of being a “streamer bait” game, and I get that. There’s been a lot of interest in these types of games recently, which feel purposely designed to frustrate the player and bait reactions. Make them spend hours grinding a section, then rip all that progress away. It seems like there’s been a big rise in climbing games in particular, where the devs throw a bunch of assets against a wall and put a trophy at the top.
