"All Children, except one, grow up"... Here is my original recording of Peter and Wendy written by J. M. Barrie in 1911, often referred to simply as “Peter Pan.” This book is an adaptation of Barrie’s own 1904 stage play “Peter Pan or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up, A Fantasy in Five Acts” which was the first iteration of this story. I invite you before you listen to try to forget everything you know about Peter Pan from the many adaptations you may have seen, and to let yourself hear the story as it was originally written, as though for the first time. Although so many adaptations have merits of their own, I have found that none of them explore the themes and ideas of the story in any way as deeply as the original, which can be quite surprising in its richness, its darkness and its sense of danger. There are also some derogatory comments in the story about “slaves” in general. I have left these as they are in this recording for people to experience on their own and have their own thoughts about. I bring it up so that listeners who don’t wish to engage with these issues, are not surprised by them as they listen. The Indians in Neverland are referred to as savages, view Peter Pan as the “great white father,” and are consistently written as though they are of a different and lesser species then their English counterparts in the story. There are a great number of resources that discuss this issue further readily available online should it be of interest to you.
