In this video, Lyn introduces her student to the concept of representing sounds and changes within words with coloured tiles.
Because it is an exercise in identifying and manipulating sounds, we are not using letters or letter names. We want this boy to be able to process sounds in words, building from simple CV/VC patterns to CCVCC. This takes time and practice, but has a global effect on his reading and spelling and increases his ability to sound words out and to transcribe speech sounds correctly on the page.
This forms part of a larger lesson in reading and writing.
