Photoperiodism Plants can be classed as short-day or long-day plants, however the critical factor in determining their activity is night length. **Plants can only determine the length of time of continuous darkness.** Phytochromes- leaf pigments that enable plants to sense light and dark periods. Photoperiodism- plants response to the length of light and darkness Short-day plants flower when the days are short (which also means the night period is longer than the critical length). Long-day plants flower when the days are long (which means a short night period less than a critical length). Day-neutral plants flower independently of photoperiod, but may require a period of cold.
