Here's how to make a simple programming cable for picaxe chips. It works well with a breadboard.
Note: When using the cable II would recommend plugging the cable wires into a bread board before connecting it to the computer. This will lessen the chance of a short.
You will need...
A old serial device with a DB9 connection. You might find an old mouse that has one.
3 colors of No.20 - No.22 soild hookup wire
Electrical tape
Duck tape. White would be best.
Pliers
Side Cutters. You can use a strong pair of scissors instead.
Optional...
Solder iron
Solder
