Pieces 2
Pieces I Crystal Smith's story behind Pieces 1 & 2: I was approached to create a dance for L.J. Reynold's remake of "Come Get To This" by Marvin Gaye. He and I set up auditions to have a variety of dancers from Detroit to be a part of the project and in the video. I was on a short deadline, so I took parts of some of my favorite hustles from my brothers and sisters... Darlene, Linda, Nichol, Curtis, and Louis. That's where the name Pieces came from. Pieces 2 I again was approached by Michael Womack and Louis to create a performance for Detroit. I invited my sis Nichol to be a part of this project. The performance consisted of 8 choreographers (4 men and 4 women) sparring each other in the ring (dance floor), showing their selective dance choreography. After three complete rounds of extensive blows thrown (snipets of hustles/linedances), the judges came to an unanimous decision that DETROIT WON. Nichol suggested that I create a hustle pertaining to the performance and call it Pieces 2 and teach at the UC workshop. So I asked my other 7 choreographers, Nichol Poyntz Linda M Shuler Ynettia Branch-Oliver , Curtis Goode , Louis Jenkins Jermaine Matthews , and Julius Juicyj Vanner , to give me the steps they would like to be in the dance. I chose L.J. Reynold's song Key to The World because I thought it was fitting to use the same artist who is also a Detroit native. After a few modifications, Pieces 2 was created. The dance references have been added as an aide.
