Growing cactus in your garden ! In this video you and I will take your new cactus cutting and get it to grow huge together . I'll explain simple cactus soil and go over how you should plant your cactus in a pot that is optimal for your cactus to thrive in. You and I will also plant a cactus in the ground together and see different examples of how you should transplant your cactus. When planting cactus in your garden Digging the hole in the ground for your cactus is actually important. So is how you amend your soil for your fresh planted cactus cutting. My soil here is very rich and well draining ,which cactus love ,so I won’t need to add many store bought soil amendments. I want my cactus to naturalize , so that it doesn’t need a lot of additional water in the future so I will be encouraging it to grow and spread its roots far into the native soil. While I plant cactus in the ground , Rather than backfilling my cactus transplanting hole with store bought soil I am primarily using the native dirt. Using a bagged potting soil that is very different than your native dirt can often lead to problems for your cactus years down the road. roots will be very happy at first but later they won’t want to leave the circle hole. Instead of having your cactus roots want to only stay in hole there are way too encourage the cactus roots to leave the dug hole. Remember "Plant it high, it won't die. Plant it low it won't grow". How deep you plant your cactus is important , transplanting your cactus too deep in soil can stop airflow to the existing roots and this can slow its growth. Transplanting to high can leave your cactus a bit unstable and leave roots exposed to sun and air which will damage the roots. You should be matching the existing soil level of your potted cactus with the new soil level so the old roots can breath thru the surface. How to take cactus cuttings will be next weeks episode and I'll go over what size cactus cuttings are suitable to be planted. larger cuttings can be taken and grown with support such as stakes but today we will be chopping some cactus so that it can safely be planted in a pot without falling over. When taking cactus cuttings it is important to use the right tool . I'll give examples of several different tools you can use at home to take your own cactus cuttings next week . Showing the use of knives , saws , and pruners for taking cactus cuttings and why and how each tool is best for different applications .
