PLY to Unreal Engine 5 | Direct Point Cloud Import using LiDAR Plugin
In this tutorial, I show you how to import PLY point cloud data directly into Unreal Engine 5, even though Unreal Engine does not natively support .ply files. Unreal Engine supports lighter point cloud formats such as XYZ, PTS, LAS, LAZ, and E57 using the built-in LiDAR Point Cloud Support plugin. So in this video, we convert a PLY point cloud to XYZ format using MeshLab, then import it directly into Unreal Engine. -What you’ll learn in this video: How to convert PLY point cloud to XYZ How to use MeshLab for point cloud conversion How to enable LiDAR Point Cloud Support in Unreal Engine 5 How to import point cloud data directly into Unreal Engine Understanding dense point cloud visualization in UE5 This workflow is useful for: LiDAR data visualization Photogrammetry workflows 3D scanning projects Architectural & environment visualization Research and technical art workflows in Unreal Engine If you want to convert point clouds into meshes or import Gaussian Splats into Unreal Engine, let me know in the comments and I’ll cover that next. -Software Used: Unreal Engine 5 MeshLab -If this helped you: Like the video, subscribe for more Unreal Engine technical workflows, and comment if you want tutorials on: Point Cloud to Mesh Gaussian Splats in Unreal Engine Photogrammetry pipelines
