Potential Due to Point Charge
The electric potential at a point due to a point charge is defined as the work done in bringing a unit positive test charge from infinity to that point without acceleration.
The electric potential produced by a point charge is given by:
V= Kq/r
Where:
V = electric potential
q = magnitude of point charge
r= distance from the charge
Important Points
Electric potential is a scalar quantity.
Potential due to a positive charge is positive, while due to a negative charge it is negative.
Electric potential decreases with increase in distance from the charge.
SI unit of electric potential is volt
At infinity, the electric potential is considered zero.
