Power Skating Coaches Got Arm Swing Wrong
Most power skating coaches teach players to swing their arms forward and backwards on the ice, mimicking what they see sprinters do. In this video I break down why that advice misses the biomechanics of what arms are actually doing during skating, and why forcing the wrong arm pattern is quietly costing players power they don't even realize they're losing. The short version: your arms aren't creating forward momentum. They're counter-rotating against the force your legs are producing. In running, your push is straight back and your chest is upright, so the counter-rotation looks like forward-to-back arm swing. In skating, your push is more lateral (like a sailboat using the wind) and your chest is leaned over, so the natural counter-rotation path is more side to side. When you reduce your arm swing or force it into the wrong direction, your brain neurologically dials your leg power back to keep you balanced. You can feel this for yourself just by trying to sprint with your arms locked behind your back. This is one of the foundational concepts behind the Downhill Skating System, the mechanics-first framework we use inside Train 2.0+ to reverse-engineer the way elite skaters actually move. Try it on the ice and feel free to leave a comment with what you feel. Does your leg power change when you let your arms move laterally instead of forcing them forward and back?
