Pre Operative Bathing Routine

Before surgery, you can play an important role in your own health. Because skin is not sterile, we need to be sure that your skin is as free of germs as possible before surgery. You can reduce the number of germs on your skin by carefully washing before surgery. Following these instructions will help ensure your skin is clean before surgery. Step 1 Do not shave your legs for one week before surgery to prevent a nick or cut on your skin. Step 2 -Shower or bathe with the Hibiclens soap the night before your surgery and the morning of surgery. -Apply the Hibiclens soap to the entire body from the neck down, paying special attention to the surgical site. Do not use near your eyes, ears or genitals. -To promote the best lather with the Hibiclens, use a mesh scrub or your hands. Please do not use a washcloth. -Wash your body gently for 5 minutes. Do not scrub too hard. -After the skin is lathered, do not rinse for 1 minute so that the Hibiclens has time to produce its desired effect. Step 3 Use a nasal swab the night before surgery and the morning of surgery. Use one nasal swab for both nostrils. Rub inside the nose in a circular motion for 5-10 seconds. Step 4 Do not wash with regular soap once Hibiclens is used. Step 5 After washing with Hibiclens, do not use any lotion, powder, cream or deodorant. Step 6 After each shower with Hibiclens, wear laundered cloths. Step 7 After your first shower with Hibiclens (Chlorhexidine), if you notice you are having any type of allergic reaction: -Hives -Severe skin rash -Wheezing -Severe dizziness -Difficulty breathing -Swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat do not use the Hibiclens the morning of surgery. Alert your nurse upon arrival for surgery. Also included in the Pre-Surgical Kit Ensure Pre-Surgery Carbohydrate Drink, which helps recovery by reducing: -nausea -vomiting -pain after surgery -time in the hospital Instructions: -Drink one bottle of Ensure Pre-Surgery Carbohydrate drink the night before surgery. -Drink second bottle the day of surgery, finishing it 2 hours prior to your scheduled arrival time. -Shake each bottle well before consuming -Each bottle should be consumed quickly, in less than 5 minutes, rather than sipped over long period of time.
