Premack
The Premack principle or response deprivation can be applied to many areas of working dog training. The video is from yesterdays session with Kazan. We have been training him to do scent detection during the last two months and he has a high anticipation on that activity. Here we use that to train transportation. He has done many sessions on a brick wall in the building and thus has a high motivation to get in there. If he leaves the correct position, the handler stops or turns away from the entrance to the building that Kazan wants to enter. If he however keeps the position, the handler walks directly to the door. The goals is that he should realize that the quickest way to get to the scent detection part is to keep the position next to the handler. By doing so we can also add more anticipation to the transportation as it becomes linked to the more valuable scent detection. If you want to read more on the topic you can start with this old (from 2001) but short paper https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/…/PM…/pdf/behavan00010-0055.pdf
