Pressure & Stress (Do you know the difference?) 🤔
Stress and pressure are not the same. Effective stress management and resilience can help you control how pressure and stress affect you. In this video we explain the difference between pressure and stress, why some people thrive under pressure while others feel overwhelmed, and how to build the resilience you need to stay in control. What you’ll learn What is pressure? Pressure comes from the responsibilities and demands of life and work. It can be a positive force that helps us perform and grow. Too little pressure leads to boredom; too much pressure turns into problematic stress. What is stress? Stress is an adverse reaction to excessive pressures or demands. The Health and Safety Executive defines work-related stress as “the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them at work”. Resilience matters: If your resilience (ability to cope) is greater than the pressure you face, you feel well. If pressure exceeds your resilience, you experience stress. Building resilience through self-care, support and healthy habits is essential for long‑term wellbeing. Control and support: Employees need a degree of control over their work (pace, patterns, breaks) and access to support; without these, pressure can become stress. Research shows that having a strong support network helps build resilience and makes stress easier to manage. How to build resilience: Identify your stress triggers, organise your time, set achievable goals and seek support from friends, family or colleagues. Remember that resilience isn’t just about toughness—it’s about balance and self-care. Understanding the difference between stress and pressure, and investing in resilience, allows you to perform at your best without burning out. Use the correct terminology, and help others do the same, to create healthier conversations around mental health.
