A compressor is an automated volume control that turns your signal DOWN. That's basically it. How to actually use a compressor, and interpreting the controls and displays correctly can be a little tricky. In this tutorial I attempt to demystify compression and give you a solid understanding of how compression works, and how and when to use it. I'm using Logic Pro 9 in this demonstration. In this first of two videos, we cover the basics, and I demonstrate compression as a means of reducing the dynamic range of a signal (the difference between the loud and the quiet bits) and how a compressor can be used to add dynamic attack to an otherwise flat signal. In the next video I'll demonstrate some more advanced, more creative applications of compression using sidechaining, to add dynamic expression to your sounds and create space in your mix. www.darkarps.com
