The motions of hip extension, abduction and slight external rotation should be combined to achieve maximal glute activation. Make sure to keep your core activated the entire time to protect the spine. Only go up as high as you can without feeling any pelvic rotation or shearing of the spine. Once this becomes easy, you can add a resistance band around your thighs, and then your knees, and then your ankles. Place a pillow underneath your belly but above your pelvis to support your lumbar spine in a neutral position.
