Ever run out of propane mid-grill and swear the tank still felt heavy? You’re not wrong. Most of that weight is the tank itself. In this video, I break down how to read your tank, what “TW” really means, and how to quickly tell how much propane you actually have left. Here’s the deal… That propane tank feels heavy even when it’s empty because the steel tank itself weighs a lot. On every standard grill tank, you’ll find a marking stamped on the collar that says: TW = Tare Weight That’s the weight of the tank when it’s completely empty. For most standard 20 lb grill tanks, the TW is usually around 17 to 20 pounds. Now here’s the key part… A “full” tank doesn’t mean 20 pounds total. It means 20 pounds of propane added to the tank. So if your tank says TW = 18 pounds, a full tank will weigh about: 👉 18 + 20 = 38 pounds total That’s why even an empty tank still feels pretty solid—it’s still close to 20 pounds of steel. 🔍 HOW TO CHECK WHAT’S LEFT If you’ve got a scale, this is the most accurate way: Weigh the tank Subtract the TW number stamped on the collar What’s left = pounds of propane remaining Example: Tank weighs 28 lbs TW = 18 lbs You’ve got 10 lbs of propane left (about half a tank) ⚡ QUICK NO-SCALE TRICK No scale? Try this: Pour warm water down the side of the tank Run your hand down the metal You’ll feel a temperature change where the propane level is That’s your fill line ⚠️ GOOD TO KNOW A standard grill tank is called a 20 lb cylinder It’s only filled to about 80% capacity for safety That’s normal—don’t try to “top it off” Tanks also have an OPD valve (that triangular handle) that prevents overfilling 🧠 BOTTOM LINE Heavy doesn’t mean full The tank itself is most of the weight If you want accuracy, go by the numbers—not your arm ✅ Like this video 👉 Love DIY projects?
