Provisional Cast On
This step-by-step knitting tutorial shows you how to do a Provisional Cast-on using a crochet chain. This is a technique that can be used whenever you want to keep the stitches for your cast on "open", which basically means that you later on can pick up the stitches along the provisional cast on and unravel the crochet chain to unveil the "open" stitches. This is a technique that can be helpful in many different ways, for example if you're working a sweater or top bottom up , this type of cast on would make it possible to seamlessly add additional length after you've finished the garment. I've used this technique for Aurora Mittens, where you do a provisional cast on for the thumb, which makes it possible to later on work the thumb seamlessly. I've also used it in Braided Beanie where you use a provisional cast on for the cable, which makes it possible to sew the short sides of the cable together using Kitchener's stitch for a seamless join.
