Quadran Pavan (Part 1) This week’s dance is the Quadran Pavan taught by teacher, choreographer and dance historian, Charlotte Ewart. Charlotte most recently appeared in BBC TWO’s “A Tudor Christmas” with Lucy Worsley. The Quadran Pavan is a processional dance danced at the beginning of a Revel. Arbeau notes that the pavan is danced by “walking with decorum and measured gravity”. He added to his student Capriol that he should keep his “head and body erect and appear self-possessed.... to spit and blow (his) nose sparingly”. The notation for the dance is taken from the Inns of Court Manuscripts (approx 1570-1650) although the step details themselves are not described. Caroso and Negri describe in detail such steps. Charlotte takes us through how the steps might have been danced as well as how to achieve the equally important style adopted by the dancers. In Part 1: Charlotte describes and teaches you how to achieve the steps and style. And in Part 2: she takes us through how to put the steps together and dance the dance itself.
