Short lecture on operators in quantum mechanics. An operator does something to an object to create a new object. Examples of operators include differentiation, integration, square root, multiplication, and exponentiation. Linear operators acting on a linear combination of functions produce a result which is equivalent to the operator acting on the individual functions of the sum. Classical properties are represented in quantum mechanics by linear, Hermitian operators. Operators for physical observables include position, momentum, kinetic energy, potential energy, and the Hamiltonian (total energy) operator.
