Quantum Computing for Space Applications
Quantum Computing for Space Applications by Alessandro Grilli, Mattia Verducci, Tommaso Catuogno Thales Alenia Space Thales Alenia Space Italy is exploring how quantum computing can address complex computational challenges in the space sector. This work focuses on optimization problems in satellite operations and Earth Observation (EO), where classical methods struggle with scale, constraints, and performance. In this webinar, we highlighted recent research on quantum and hybrid quantum–classical approaches for satellite mission planning, including the use of tensor network techniques to manage high-dimensional optimization problems. We also discussed emerging work in quantum machine learning for applications such as orbit determination and multispectral and hyperspectral data analysis. The presentation shared Thales Alenia Space’s vision for quantum technologies in space and outline practical, high-impact use cases that could shape the future of EO and satellite system management.
