Rastan (Arcade) Playthrough
Playthrough of Rastan, the quintessential 1987 side-scrolling action-platformer developed and published by Taito for arcades. Set in the high-fantasy land of Ceim, the story follows a barbarian warrior named Rastan on a quest to slay a dragon in exchange for the riches of a kingdom. Narrated as a flashback by an older, kingly Rastan, the game captures the "Conan the Barbarian" aesthetic perfectly, pitting the lone hero against a gauntlet of mythical beasts and treacherous environments. The gameplay is a brutal test of reflexes and platforming precision. Rastan is armed with a versatile sword capable of striking in multiple directions, including an upward thrust and a downward "pogo" stab. Throughout the six stages, players can collect weapon upgrades—such as long-reaching maces and high-damage fire swords—and defensive gear like shields and armor that reduce incoming damage. The levels are designed with significant verticality, requiring Rastan to scale vines, leap across crumbling pillars, and navigate deadly water hazards that instantly drain health. The difficulty is legendary, largely due to the "knockback" mechanic where taking damage often sends Rastan flying into pits or spikes. Each stage is divided into an outdoor trekking area and a sprawling indoor castle, culminating in a grueling boss fight against entities like the fire-breathing Hydra or the skeletal Knight. Visually, Rastan was a marvel of its era, featuring detailed multi-layered parallax scrolling that gave the landscapes immense depth. The sunset backdrops and crumbling ruins create a somber, epic atmosphere. This is further elevated by a sweeping, cinematic soundtrack that is widely considered one of the best in 8-bit arcade history, cementing Rastan’s legacy as a foundational title in the hack-and-slash genre.
