Today on Kane's Pick, we’re taking the "defiant" route with the Rebel Cask Strength (Single Barrel). Hand-picked from Lux Row Distillers, this isn't your average wheater. We're talking 120-proof intensity that stays true to the 1849 Stitzel-Weller recipe. If you like the Weller and Larceny bottles I have on the shelf behind me, you need to see how Rebel stacks up when the training wheels (and the water) are taken off. Is it a "Must-Buy" or does the heat overwhelm the wheat? The Stats: Proof: 120 (Cask Strength) Mash Bill: 68% Corn, 20% Wheat, 12% Malted Barley Distillery: Lux Row Distillers (Bardstown, KY) Tasting Notes for the Review: Nose: Heavy toasted marshmallow, caramel, and candied walnuts. There’s a distinct "dark" sweetness here that hints at the high proof. Palate: Thick and oily. You get hit with wild honey and ripened dark fruits (think plums or raisins) followed by a spicy "red hot" cinnamon kick that lets you know it’s 120 proof. The Finish: Long and warm. It leaves you with a lingering taste of toasted oak, brown sugar, and a touch of leather.
