Reconstructing The Hauksbee Electrostatic Generator from 1709
In this video, I reconstruct Francis Hauksbee's electrostatic generator. This machine became a staple of electrical experiments throughout the 18th century, although it didn't achieve the immediate popularity we might expect. The machine evolved from work Hauksbee performed around 1705-1706. See in particular: "An account of an experiment made before the Royal Society at Gresham College, together with a repetition of the same, touching the production of a considerable light upon a slight attrition of the hands on a glass globe exhausted of its air: with other remarkable occurrences." Sept. 1706, Phil. Trans. Roy. Soc. Lond., vol. 15 iss. 307 pp.2277-2282 I wanted to make this machine to better understand the challenges Hauksbee must have faced, as well as to give myself a period-accurate electrostatic generator. I mostly used materials and tools which were available in the period. It's not a strict reproduction, but instead it's something I think most people could build, especially if they use more modern tools. The plans will be published on my website soon. I'm not that skilled in woodworking, so don't expect everything to be efficient or clever or even well done! I also was unable to use this machine to electrify the glass globe, despite many hours and iterations. The globe itself can be electrified easily enough when you have it alone, rubbed with silk. But putting it in the machine, there seems to be a dissipative path somewhere. I coated the globe with shellac on the interior, but this didn't do much. I tried different ways of mounting it, using wood or epoxy, minimizing contact with the rest of the machine, but still nothing. I even tried making a globe that could be evacuated with a vacuum pump, but this did not help. During testing near my wood burning stove, humidity could get down to 20-30%, which should make electrification easy. But no combination of materials or changes to the apparatus have yet given me any measurable electrification. I'm always open to questions, concerns, criticisms, and advice. Especially advice for getting the globe to hold a charge!
