Remembering James Connolly✊🇮🇪 In this video, we delve into the life and legacy of James Connolly, an Irish revolutionary who was executed by firing squad in Kilmainham Gaol on May 12th, 1916. Join us as we explore his journey from his humble beginnings to his pivotal role in the fight for Irish independence. Early Life: James Connolly was born on June 5th, 1868, in the Cowgate district of Edinburgh, a slum known as "Little Ireland." Raised in a laboring family, Connolly's early education ended at the age of ten when he began working to support his family. At 14, he enlisted in the British Army, serving in Ireland during the Land War, before deserting to avoid being sent to India. Family and Activism: After leaving the army, Connolly married Lillie Reynolds and became involved in the Scottish Socialist Federation. Struggling to support his family, he briefly ran a cobbler's shop but ultimately dedicated himself to the socialist movement. By 1892, Connolly was deeply involved in the Scottish Socialist Federation and later moved to Dublin to become the secretary of the Dublin Socialist Club, which he transformed into the Irish Socialist Republican Party (ISRP). International Influence: In 1903, Connolly and his family emigrated to the USA, where he continued his activism with the Socialist Labor Party of America, the Socialist Party of America, and the Industrial Workers of the World. He founded the Irish Socialist Federation in New York and authored the influential book "Labour in Irish History" in 1910. Return to Ireland and the Easter Rising: Returning to Ireland in 1910, Connolly became a key figure in the Irish Transport and General Workers Union and founded the Irish Citizen Army (ICA) in response to the 1913 Lockout. The ICA aimed to defend workers and ultimately sought an independent, socialist Irish nation. Connolly played a crucial role in the Easter Rising of 1916, serving as Commandant of the Dublin Brigade. Final Days and Legacy: Badly wounded during the Rising, Connolly was executed by firing squad on May 12th, 1916. His execution caused widespread outrage, leading to an order to halt further executions. Connolly's legacy endures, with statues in Dublin, Chicago, and Belfast, and landmarks like Connolly Station and Connolly Hospital named in his honor.
