In this video, I break down what that older work really suggests, why the type matters (short-acting propionate vs modern systemic gels), and what the realistic trade-offs are. Testosterone can push skin in a “more androgenic” direction, so oily skin, acne flares, and unwanted hair are always on the menu for the wrong person or the wrong formula. I also show the systemic biopsy data people love to reference (postmenopausal women on oestrogen + testosterone implants showing higher skin collagen content), and explain why that’s interesting science but not the same thing as proving a face lift in a jar. Finally, we talk safety and why I’m cautious about rub-off testosterone gels (partner/child transfer is documented in the medical literature). Educational only. This is not personal medical advice. If you’re considering anything hormone-based, do it with a clinician who understands dosing, formulation, and risk screening. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- STUDIES: Topical testosterone propionate on aging skin (classic 1960s-era paper) Papa CM. Effect of topical hormones on aging human skin. Journal of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. 1967;18:549–562. Key point: clinically visible changes (wrinkle “effacement,” etc.) were modest, while microscopic/biopsy architecture changes were more impressive. PDF: Estrogen + testosterone implants and skin collagen (the “48% greater” biopsy signal) Brincat M, Moniz CF, Studd JWW, et al. Sex hormones and skin collagen content in postmenopausal women. Br Med J (Clin Res Ed). 1983. (PubMed: 6416400) Key point: skin collagen content (via hydroxyproline from biopsies) was reported ~48% higher in women treated long-term with oestrogen + testosterone implants vs matched untreated controls. Type III collagen shift with estradiol + testosterone implants Savvas M, et al. Type III collagen content in the skin of postmenopausal women receiving oestradiol and testosterone implants. BJOG. 1993. (PubMed: 8476808) Key point: HRT with estradiol + testosterone implants was associated with an increase in the proportion of type III collagen in skin. Testosterone gel transfer risk (why you don’t want “rub-off” products for this conversation) Patel A, et al. Prenatal virilization associated with paternal testosterone gel exposure. (Case report) 2010. Key point: documents clinically meaningful secondary exposure from transdermal testosterone gel via skin contact/transfer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FTC: Some links included in this description might be affiliate links.
