Removing Mill Scale for the Blacksmith
Removing mill scale and forging scale can be a very time consuming task for the blacksmith. I know I have spent days and days grinding and buffing. Here is a very simple trick that I learned that will save you hours of time. I knew that vinegar could be used to take off mill scale but I never tried it on a larger scale before recently. I was so impressed with this method that I had to share it with any blacksmiths out there interested. Now I soak everything I make that will fit in the tub. If it wont fit I try to soak the parts before I assemble the piece. For long lengths of rod I soak them in an eves trough before forging them. Vinegar is cheap and easy to come by and the time it will save you will more than pay for itself. Give it a try! You will never go back to buffing off mill scale again. Beckett’s Blacksmithing At Beckett’s Blacksmithing I specialize in hand forged products and custom decorative ironwork. I use traditional tools and methods and heat my steel in a coal fired forge. In addition to this, I use modern tools such as welders, power tools, and gas torches to bring this ancient trade into the modern era.
