This video details the inspection and repair of a wood-paneled cathedral ceiling in a 22-year-old home in Fairbanks, Alaska (in IECC Climate Zone 8). The ceiling had a long history of significant air leakage and condensation-related moisture problems, and the inspection process reveals the causes of these issues as well as their impacts to the roof assembly. The video then shows the installation of a new 6 mil poly vapor retarder onto the ceiling, followed by 1-1/2" thick furring over the vapor retarder. The furring increases energy efficiency by eliminating the need to pierce the vapor retarder to attach the paneling. It also provides a space to accommodate wiring and electrical outlets which would also typically require penetrating the vapor retarder.
