Rev. Richard Cater Preaching at Tabalia - Closing of the 100 Annivesary and Admission, Renewal and Release of Brothers. His background and role in the Melanesian Brotherhood: From 1990 to 2005, Carter lived and worked with the Melanesian Brotherhood, an Anglican religious order, as a tutor, chaplain, and mission coordinator at Tabalia (Headquarters of the MBH) on the island of Guadalcanal FROM 1990 - 2005. He joined the Brotherhood himself during this time, taking vows of simplicity and prayer. While he was chaplain, seven of his friends and fellow brothers were tragically murdered in 2003 during ethnic conflict in the Solomon Islands. He later wrote about this experience and the loss in his book, In Search of the Lost: The Death and Life of Seven Peacemakers of the Melanesian Brotherhood. As a former brother, he maintains a close connection to the Melanesian Brotherhood and serves as the UK Commissary for the Archbishop of Melanesia. His current work in the UK: After returning to the UK, Carter realized he could apply the monastic values he learned in the Solomon Islands to life in London. He founded the Nazareth Community, which is based on principles such as silence, service, and sacrament, and brings together people from diverse backgrounds. His work at St Martin-in-the-Fields involves mission and outreach, including supporting homeless people, refugees, and visitors. He has written several books - The City is My Monastery and Letters from Nazareth.
