Forging the Future | RIDC’s Mill 19 is the catalytic redevelopment of the former Pittsburgh J&L Steel mill into a green, sustainable advanced manufacturing research center. The building was left to rust when the steel industry collapsed, but its bones – the underlying steel superstructure – remained strong. They now support the Mill’s solar array, and today, Mill 19 is growing into an engine of revitalization for the entire Hazelwood Green community and Pittsburgh region. Mill 19’s steel superstructure supports the largest single sloped roof solar array in the U.S., with enough electricity to power 380 homes. The complex has numerous other sustainability features including landscaping that incorporates a rainwater recycling system and reclaimed parts of the former mill. The Mill’s redevelopment story includes community, foundation, and university partnerships for the funding, use, and design of the Mill with RIDC serving as the non-profit developer for the site. Mill 19 is home to advanced manufacturing partners including Carnegie Mellon’s Manufacturing Futures Initiative, the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute (ARM), Catalyst Connection, and Motional. With robotics and advanced manufacturing rapidly becoming economic pillars of the region, finding sites that can be redeveloped into places where companies can invest and grow is crucial. These industries are opportunities to bring jobs to distressed regions and align projects with community redevelopment goals. These new industries have enabled us to develop a vision for the future for many of the region’s distressed former industrial sites, an opportunity to invest in them again, getting them back on the tax rolls and producing thousands of new family-sustaining jobs.
