the old lock on the loo door packed in after many years service - so it turned into a fun fix. I measured up and used my Ebay parts department for the hardware - thanks to d16ger who went above and beyond.
turns out you can tweak the legs on a feather spring - maybe next time I will read the instructions first - NOT
