The simplest finite element possible lies along a line between two points. This is the rod element. Civil engineers use a version which cannot carry torsion or bending moments and is called a pin-ended truss. The concept is useful to us because we can illustrate the assembly of truss members and apply boundary conditions for these simple elements.
