"This drill teaches how to channel an opponent’s push, or energy, through your body and into the ground. The basic mistake of resistance means that when I am pushed, I not only tense up, but I push or lean forward against my partner. In rooting, I learn to neither go forward, which is resisting, nor to give way or neutralize. Rooting is to put a leg and structure in the way of their push. "
