The trach is out and the patient is in respiratory distress!! What do I do now?
The best treatment in a tracheostomy emergency is not mouth to trach resuscitation, although it is tempting! The trach box has many useful tools to aid in ventilation until an RT or physician can replace the tracheostomy.
If the patient has respiratory arrested or is in impending respiratory arrest, cover the stoma with gauze and ventilate through the oropharynx until help arrives.
