Despite sanctions, slowing economic growth, high inflation, weak consumer demand and massive wartime spending, the Russian ruble has surged to its strongest levels since the beginning of 2023. And that’s raising some serious questions. In this video, we examine the mysterious rise of the ruble and ask whether Russia’s exchange rate is still functioning as a genuine market indicator — or whether it is now being actively managed behind the scenes. We look at the latest dollar/ruble and yuan/ruble exchange rate charts, the dramatic movements since 2020, the huge volatility following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and the strengthening trend that has emerged again since late 2024.
