What is safe torque-off? A fundamental requirement for any industrial machinery is that it is safe. To achieve this, the machine needs a fail-safe device, one that in the event of a failure responds in such a way that no harm will come personnel near the machine. This video explains how safe-torque off (STO), a feature of ABB variable-speed drives, brings a motor’s torque to a complete stop and prevents it from restarting unexpectedly. This enables tasks such as maintenance, cleaning or mechanical adjustments to be carried out with no risk to the user, while the drive is ready to resume operations at a moment’s notice.
