Arlen Heginbotham, J. Paul Getty Museum, discusses the layer-by-layer lacquer sampling procedure used at the Getty when preparing lacquer for analysis by Py-GC/MS. Studying each layer, as opposed to simply one layer, allows the scientist to not only obtain detailed information about the lacquer, but also better understand how to conserve it.
