How do convert a downloaded supplier part into a usable assembly? Many times a supplier component will be saved as a single file, even though it represents a sub-assembly. This will show up in SOLIDWORKS as a multi-body part. For static components, that's usually OK. But what if you need the components to move--link with hinge? In that case, you need to make the part into an assembly. First, you will use the Save Bodies command to save out the bodies as individual part files. In the same command, you can also choose to form them into a static assembly. Now you have an assembly that has external links to all the newly created part files. That's kind of messy. To clean that up, first, you want to break the links to the original downloaded part. Next, you will want to save the parts in the assembly as Virtual Parts. This will store the partsinternally, so there are no external .sldprt files required. Once the assembly has been saved, you can go back to Windowws Explorer and delete all those part files that were created from the Save Bodies operation. As a last step (not shown in the video), apply any mates needed to get the desired movement of the assembly.
